Education — Young People and Deliberate Self Harm

Deliberate self harm in young people is a hugely worrying phenomena that is on the rise. In 2008/2009 there were 2,727 admissions in the UK for self-harm among under 25s; this was up from 1,758 in 2004/2005 (BBC News 12/3/2010). Professor Keith Hawton from Oxford University was quoted as saying that this is believed to be the tip of the iceberg with many more young people never presenting to hospitals. Regarding deliberate self harm in schools and colleges he said: "Teachers need to know about it and be well informed. When they discover it, as all will, they need to know they can handle it without freaking out."

This workshop, informed by one of the most effective psychological treatments for deliberate self harm, helps anyone working with young people to understand deliberate self harm. The day aims to teach helpful ways of responding to young people in a respectful and measured way that provides support and allows for onward referral when necessary. The workshop combines didactic and experiential teaching and provides 7 hours towards CPD.

This workshop will be delivered by Dr Helen O'Connor and Dr Sara Melly. See our About page for more information on presenters.
